they really went, like, way out of their way to avoid us ever getting to see Usagi (or any other character, for that matter) be dynamic/expressive at all :///
They’re trying to like…make it more like the manga, I thought?
In the manga their faces weren’t cartoony-anime like. You would have been better off comparing the new anime to the manga scans instead of the old show.
Also, this very pretty, clean and colorful style is so of the ~Now~.
It’s neat, seeing the differences that 20 years of artistic creates.

Yes they really were taking great pains to keep Usagi from ever looking ridiculous, now weren’t they?
In all seriousness I get it, I had a similar initial reaction, but other people have pointed out that these series are both products of their time- the original Sailor Moon anime was INCREDIBLY 90s, with all the over-the-top, simplified, chibi-esque faces that entailed, while Crystal is INCREDIBLY modern, which means everyone has more “realistic” expressions/reactions- they’re still emotive, they just don’t also, y’know, develop fangs, loose eye definitions, and suddenly become blue. Also yeah, they’re taking their cues from the manga- which also had more realistic reactions and less suddenly-chibi reactions. Crystal is also taking the storyline a bit more “seriously”, in keeping closer to the manga- there’s less filler, less overtly joke-y stuff. The over-the-top reactions of the original anime would feel a little dissonant in Crystal, I think!
Also… Why did you pick that one of Usagi’s mother when this happens just a few seconds later? It’s not as though they hide her face and we never see her mad!

Also this one of Usagi is p. great and shows her being pissed off, I just wanna include it ‘cause I dig it and it’s very expressive while still keeping with the tone/feel of Crystal:

So in sum: is it expressive/dynamic? Yes, but in a different way that’s indicative of modern styles of animation- and it’s REALLY COOL to see how they compare!
#look it’s a different style#yeah the dorky overreactions of Usagi in the original run were hilarious and endearing#but Crystal is a different take on the same story and is making animation choices for a reason#and that ought to be respected!#please don’t try to go ‘oh yeah they’re sanitizing emotion!’ here because… they aren’t?#it’s just a different take on those emotions?#it’s totally fine to prefer one to the other!#but there IS a reason we don’t have suddenly chibi/superdeformed reactions#and if you look at things like PMMM which they’re gonna be taking their cues from#you’re gonna see a lack of the over-the-top reactions of the 90s as well#animation is an evolving medium and there are time-relevant trends!#Crystal isn’t a direct remake- it’s not GOING to be the anime of the 90s#and honestly? that’s AWESOME
