high school students of america: get politically active NOW
organize:
- charity drives for food, clothes and toiletries. womens health care products such as pads or tampons are vital for campaigns like these
- organize a walk out
- create clubs and communities that are openly welcoming to marginalized people at your school. ask a teacher you trust to be involved. theres almost always at least one cool teacher.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS- as a student you are subject to different rights than you are at home, know what you can and cannot do. student rights differ from state to state. know yours and know what adults can and cannot do.
PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE DIFFERENT FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS THAN PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS
every teacher is different and i realize some are bound to be awful people but do NOT turn teachers into your enemy. unite around each other, not a projected boogeyman. you need to foster solidarity with each other and the adults who want to help you.
what i remember the most about growing up as an angry highschooler in the bush era was the raw impotent rage at a system i felt was impossible to break through. boiling with anger wont help you, using that anger to help your classmates and community will. you have the power to change your school for the better, that’s how you can help. create a learning environment thats as safe as it can be for everyone who attends
